Service design: Mobile ophthalmology comes to the patient

The challenge

For elderly or immobile people, a visit to the ophthalmologist can pose a number of challenges, and often times relatives or nursing homes must accompany the patient. As a consequence, regular ophthalmological examinations are skipped, which can increase a patient’s risk of vision loss.

The solution

In cooperation with an ophthalmologist, medignition developed Augenmobil, the first mobile eye clinic in Switzerland. The idea is simple: Qualified medical staff visits elderly patients in care centers. Using mobile measuring devices, the data is collected on site within a few minutes and transmitted in real time to an ophthalmologist for assessment. The ophthalmologist then analyses the transmitted images and measured values, formulates recommendations and informs the patients, care centers, relatives and opticians. This gives patients easy access to ophthalmological services. Thanks to Augenmobil, chronic eye diseases can be detected and treated earlier, and improve a patient’s quality of life.

Ophthalmology has been one of medignition’s research focus areas for many years. Thanks to this know-how, we understand the clinical problem in ophthalmologic primary care and were able to quantify the market potential of the Augenmobil idea. medignition is co-founder of Augenmobil AG and supported management in the founding of the company, regulatory requirements and administration. We build a novel clinical information system – a unique system specifically developed for the operation of a modern, fully digitalized telemedicine service. medignition also created Augenmobil’s corporate identity – from the website to the brochure.

“Visits to the ophthalmologist are connected with a high effort and thus high costs for elderly patients, we can save these resources with Augenmobil.”
